The Problem with Beliefs by Jim Walker

In doing research on my in-process book , Memes for the Creation of a New Culture,  by doing some Googling, I found longish but well worth it essay, The problems with beliefs by Jim Walker on his website, nobeliefs.com. Walker explores the concept of beliefs all the way from their origins to their implications. The essence of his conclusions about beliefs is, don’t have them. I am going to discuss this more in the section of my book,  Believing in Your Beliefs which I have enhanced and extended recently. I bought a few college courses on DVD from The Teaching Company. The Teaching Company has assembled an amazing series of college courses on cutting edge topics.

The one I am watching today is about chaos theory, something I first learned about when I lived in Santa Cruz, California from Professor Ralph Abraham at UC Santa Cruz. 

I was lucky enough to have Dr. Abraham do a talk at one of the Island Foundation Salons I hosted.

What Happens When You Start Believing in Your Beliefs? — Less Wrong

Each of us believes in a variety of ideas, concepts and credos. Taken together, some social scientists describe constellations of these beliefs as our "belief system."

Having belief systems works well in navigating the uncertain time-space we call reality. The belief system provide a mental map or model with which we use to chart a course and make decisions.
